Operating a Portable Fire Extinguisher at Home or Workplace

Fire extinguishers considered as the primary first aid equipment that can be used to control small fires before it becomes large.Therefore it is very important for everyone to have know-how of the product for its correct usage. Different types of portable fire extinguishers got identified by their colour coding or labelling.

When buying fire extinguishers it is important to know about 4 different classes of fire extinguishers so that you can choose the right one for your purpose. There are five classes of fire extinguishers – A, B, C and D– and each extinguishes the fire on different type of surfaces.

Class A extinguishers use flammablematerial as their fuel source. It will put out fires in ordinary combustiblessuch as wood, straw, textiles, coal and paper.

Class B extinguishers are for use onflammable liquids like grease, gasoline, petrol, diesel, oils, paint paraffinetc.

Class C extinguishers are suitable for use only on electrically energised fires or flammable gases like Methane, Propane,Natural Gas etc.

Class D extinguishers are designed for use on flammable metals like Magnesium, Aluminium, Lithium etc.


Multipurpose extinguishers can be used on different types of fires and labelled with more than one class, like A-B, B-C or A-B-C. Using an appropriate type of fire extinguisher at any required situation may save lives and property.


In case of fire, first get yourself and people nearby you to a safer place before trying to extinguish any fire. Second, follow fire safety signs to find out the appropriate installed fire safety equipment.


Using your portable fire extinguisher

It is the best idea to remember the fire fighter mantra“PASS” which means Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.These are 4 basic simple steps using which anyone can make efficient use of fire extinguisher to extinguish any fire.

Most of the fire extinguisher is having a seal or locking pin at the top which is lever or handle which keeps the handle from being pressed accidentally. In order to use the fire extinguisher one needs to pull that pin or break that seal or open the lock. Some of the extinguishers may have other type of lever-releasing mechanism as well, that includes button.



Aim at the base of the fireAim low

Starts to aim the nozzle or outlet low towards the base of fire. Don’t ever try to aim at the flames else the extinguishing agent will be ineffective as it will flow right through the flames. It will be more effective only when it hits the base of the fire. Don’t forget to read the instructions mentioned on the manual for more clarity.



Squeeze the lever

You will find it easy to discharge the extinguishing agent by squeezing the lever. To stop the same just release the lever to original form. There are some models of fire extinguisher where you may find a button instead of the lever.





We must prevent and stop unwanted fires that destroy lives and property.In order to achieve this goal all persons must cooperate and take the time to put waste paper in the appropriate containers. And don't allow trash, such as oily rags or paper to accumulate. We must be careful about the ways we use things that could cause unwanted fires.
